Goals of Laboratory on Geoinformatics and Cartography (LGC)

LGC specializes in:

  • cartography and geoinformatics in informational society
  • spatial data infrastructures
  • mobile and sensor mapping
  • cartography in crisis management
  • contextual cartography
  • cartographical generalization
  • geographical cartography
  • cognitive visualization

LGC participates in many research projects at both local and international levels. Their overview can be found in a separate page.

LGC cooperates with a number of prominent scientific workplaces both in the Czech Republic and worldwide. It actively participates in the activities of Czech Cartographic Society, Czech Geographic Society and Czech Association for Geographic Information. On the international level, LGC is active in many scientific organizations, such as ICA, ISPRS, FIG, IGU, CODATA, ISCGM, GSDI and ISDE.

Head of LGC, prof. RNDr. Milan KONEČNÝ, CSc. was in 2003-2007 the President of the International Cartographic Association (ICA). He is the Chairman of ICA Commission on Cartography for Early Warning and Crisis Management. Since 2006, he has been the Vice-President of the International Society for Digital Earth. He is the President of European Regional Research Center of International Eurasian Academy. He has participated as an expert representing the Czech Republic in creation of the INSPIRE initiative. Prof. Konečný, together with the LGC staff, also organized many international conferences both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The most important conferences in the Czech Republic include the following:
