Research is focused to the study of climate fluctuations (mainly temperature and precipitation) in the Czech Republic based on documentary evidence, dendroclimatic data, early instrumental measurements and regular meteorological observations during the last millennium. The tradition of polar area research at the Department of Geography dates back to the 1980s. At that time, the first scientific expeditions to Spitsbergen focused on climatology and geomorphology were carried out. Since 1994, the team of the Masaryk University has also been involved in Antarctic research. Initially, in the framework of international cooperation, stays were held at various Antarctic stations and since 2006 the scientific activities have moved to the island of James Ross, where a Czech station was built.
