Characteristics of the project:

The main objective of the project is a multilevel analysis of the temporal and spatial variability of the climate of Brno and Olomouc as examples of medium-sized towns.

The crux of the project is the use of data of different resolution in time and space. Their following synthesis will be conducted with special regard to studies of the potential impact on the urban environment and potentially increased incidence of meteorological extremes as a consequence of global climate change. To accomplish the main objectives the project will focus on the following partial problems:

  • spatial differentiation of the fields of air temperature, atmospheric precipitation and selected meteorological elements and their climatic characteristics on a urban and suburban landscape using remotely sensed, standard and special-purpose meteorological measurements

  • specificities of the urban climate compared to a suburban landscape, and quantitative (analysis of instrumental measurements) and qualitative (type of active surface, predominant social activities and the functions of concrete parts of the studied territory) determination, verification and substantiation of these specificities.

  • analysis of the causes of the differences in the spatiotemporal variability of characteristics between the urban and suburban landscape and their generalisation

  • comparisons of the achieved results with similar analyses of the climate of medium-scale urbanised territories in the context of Central Europe with regard to the process of global warming.
